Alicia's Photo Challege #3: Rule of Thirds

The Challenge: "Have you heard of "the rule of thirds"? Well, "traditionally" when taking portraits, you would imagine your photo being split into thirds, horizontally and vertically... the eyes of your subject would be 2/3 ways up the photo... and centered. While there really isn't anything particularly wrong with this... and as darling as your subject is... it can get boring. Let's try something different...
Feel free to throw your subject far to the left or right, or halves... you'll only figure out what you like if you try it. Remember that with photography, there is no right or wrong. It is how you see something. The beauty of photography is the diversity!
So this week's challenge is simple. Play around with centering and off-centering your subject. See what you like best! But try it all! Don't forget to watch for distracting shadows on the face (particularly the eyes). Then come back next Thursday and link up to share your favorite(s)!

These pictures were taken about an hour before sunset with the camera facing the sun. I was reading the manual to my camera this week and it said something about how you shouldn't shoot directly into the sun or it could damage the camera, so maybe if I get a UV filter for my camera I'd be okay?? I don't know, but I think I'll ask around before I shoot straight into the sun again. :) And some of my pictures had the purpleish circle or streak on part of the picture from the sun, so I also wonder if a UV filter would take care of that too . . . Do any of you know the answer to these questions? . . . anyway . . .
These are my favorite 3:

This one is off to the the left side.

This one is more in the center.

This one is diagnalish and more in the top third.

I was trying to go for a red, white, and blue theme with the upcoming holiday and all, but I don't think that it was quite as obvious as I was hoping for . . . Oh well! :)

Alicia's Photo Challenge #2

This last weeks challenge was to "get in there". I had a few favorites . . . the first two I took of my husband sitting on the kitchen floor. He had just gotten home from work and I told him to sit down and be my guinea pig. He kept complaining in between shots . . . something about being hungry . . . I don't know, I wasn't really listening, I was having too much fun :). Don't worry all of you perfect wives out there, he only starved for about 5 minutes, I promise. The third picture is of my daughter, Katelyn. The last picture is of my sister in law. I love her eyes!!
I did play around with the coloring on them a little bit just with the program that came with our HP printer to transfer and print our pictures. I dream of getting photo shop . . . someday.

Both of the pics of David are in our kitchen next to the sliding glass doors, with natural light shining in.

This one was also taken in our kitchen, but it was with no natural light. I took a work lamp and shined it on her. The picture straight out of the camera wasn't that great (the lamp didn't provide enough light), but after I played with it a bit, I think it turned out okay.

This picture was taken in the back yard of the new house that she and her fiance just bought.

If anybody wants to do the photo challenges too, click on the button on the top right side of my blog. I'm having sooooo much fun doing them, and I'm sure you would too!

Sherri's Photo Shoot

Sherri was nice enough to let me have fun with my camera and take pictures of her (even though it was raining). She's such a good sport! Doesn't she have the prettiest eyes?!

My Quilt Shelf

David and his dad built this shelf for me to hang up the quilt I recently finished. I LOVE IT!!! I think it turned out so beautiful!

Alicia's Photo Challenge

I joined Alicia State's photo challenge! Every Friday she gives a short lesson on photography and then you go out and try it yourself. You're supposed to post your favorite one, but I really liked two of them so I had to post them both ;). This last weeks lesson was on lighting, so here are my favorite pictures that I took.

This one was taken when there was lots of cloud cover . . .

This one was taken when the sun peaked through for a little bit.
Both pictures were taken in our back yard.
